Devlog02: Prototype

Hi, welcome back!

We just reached the end of this Prototyping week. A very busy week.
Together with the Prototype, we finished our Game Design Document, Tech Document and ArtBible!

But hey, let's start with a very important announcement: AirshipGame now has an actual title!!!

That title is: "Cloudy with a Chance of Cannonballs"
"CCC" for friends.

Art

Yes, we finished our Art Bible, the style of CCC is now described in there.
As the art side of the Tech Document also needed to be filled, research never stopped. We decided for example that we'll use Triplanar projection for the mountains in the scene. This should allow us to paint only one tileable texture to use for all of them, also cutting time from making super good UVs as they are not really necessary. The seam between mountains close to each other should also be less noticeable.

Various mockups were made to be put in the Art Bible and in the GDD, showing different elements of the game (a main menu idea, ship damage/health) and how it would look like. An asset going through the pipeline was also made. Everything can be seen in the Art Bible or the image below.

Prototype

In Devlog01, our prototype showed only the airship movement. Now all the core mechanics should be there.
Here are the current controls for the prototype:

The controls are still a work in progress of course, we are going to change them also based on the feedback we get from our members and not.
We are thinking for example of dropping keyboard support, leaving only the controller. The speed will be most likely controlled by the analog stick instead of the triggers. And so on.

Right now the prototype supports two players: one using the controller, and one using the keyboard. The speed of the airship is affected by the wind, so don't be surprised if you start going a bit faster or slower; to know the direction in which the wind is blowing, look at that little arrow at the center of the arena. The speed boost is also available, though it will most likely work differently in the future. You can shoot each other and after a certain damage, defeat your enemy; at this point the a new match will start automatically.
In the future of course there will be an appropriate screen.

Don't let the gif deceive you, it was made by Davide and he can't use the keyboard and the controller at the same time!

Next

We received some feedback so we will probably quickly try a few more things in the prototype, before abandoning it and start a new clean project for the Production phase!
On the art side, it's time to design some airships, and start building that arena; the clouds shader will probably take priority on that front.

See you soon!
